Project Title: A Prototype Bioreactor for Kitchen Waste Disposal.
Project PI:Prof. R.K. Asthana, Centre of Advance Studies, Department of Botany, BHU
India generates 188,500 tons of MSW (or 68.8 million tons per year) and this increases by 50% every decade. (1) Some of this waste will be recovered by an army of informal recyclers (20% in large cities, lesser in smaller cities), leaving more than 80% to reach open dumpsites where it causes damaging public health, deteriorating the environment and causes climate change. Therefore, we aimed at using innovatively designed bioreactor a mosaic of engineering design compounded with biologist expertise in microbiological process generated low cost technology to be used by every house in the city/villages for multipronged benefits in remediation of kitchen waste especially plant products/ vegetables waste via generation of biogas as well as bio fertilizer. However, recycling model is left untouched. In commemoration of centenary celebration we at BHU should initiate a process like this to become a paragon for other academic institution in managing its paper wastes. Thus we firmly believe that the present project proposal will support our hopes for the scope of eco-friendly paper waste management.
Project Title: Developing Android App for real time estimation and visualization of irrigation water demand.
Project PI: Dr. Prashant Kumar Srivastava Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development, BHU
The accurate estimation of soil moisture is important for understanding the ecosystem services. The aim of tis project is to monitor and display irrigation water demand using the mobile technology. Irrigation water management represents the use of the suitable quantity of water at the proper time and it is usually pursued by combining measurements of soil moisture with an optimized irrigation plan, resulting in maximum crop yields and minimum leaching of water and nutrients to the groundwater. The accurate soil moisture estimation by continuous monitoring of soil moisture for irrigation scheduling will help in improving the management of water resources and reduce pressure on the society facing water scarcity. Farmers need the information on irrigation water demand on regular basis in order to provide the irrigation on time. Further, any sudden changes in weather can also be understood by regular monitoring of soil water content. By using the mobile technology, the condition of soil and irrigation water demand can be displayed in real time on daily basis that will be helpful for the water resource management.
Project Title: Accelerated Tooth Movement (Wilcodontics) Novel Electrical Method.
Project PI: Dr. Ashish Agrawal Department of Dental Science, Institute of Medical Science, BHU
Usually orthodontic treatment requires a long duration of 2 years, which possesses high risk of caries, gingival diseases, external root resorption and decreased patient compliance. Therefore accelerated tooth movement is desirable for its multiple potential benefits, which includes shorter treatment duration, reduced side effects, enhanced envelop of tooth movement. Piezoelectricity is a phenomenon in which deformation of the crystal structure produces a flow of current. Similar phenomena occur in bony structure when external mechanical force is applied, piezoelectric current is generated, which activates the biochemical mediators for bone formation and resorbtion such as OPG & RANKEL etc. Addition of artificial piezoelectric current by application of micro milli Ampere DC current along with mechanical force can potentiate the rate of tooth movement by considerable amount. This device if proved successful will not only be beneficial in field of orthodontics but will prove beneficial in field of orthopedics in terms of bone healing and redirecting bone growth.
Project Title: Development of Indigenous low cost expandable cage system for spine surgery in India Population.
Project PI: Dr. Sanjay Yadav Department of Orthopedic, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU
Anterior column reconstruction is an important aspect of spine surgery. Traditionally, this was achieved with one's own bone like iliac crest or fibula or rib. Subsequently, mesh cages made of titanium were used. Harms et al described these. They have their own advantages & disadvantages. Further expandable cages were developed. Initial designs have problem of cage subsidence (cage gets pushed into the vertebral body end plates). So, we propose the development of expandable edge-loading cage design. We hypothesize that this will cause less subsidence & transform into better outcomes. As a further advancement of this proposal, we also plan/propose to coat the end plates of expandable cage with hydroxyapatite which should lead to better fusion and bony integration. An alternative method for the cancer drug development is required. Number of spine cases operated/ treated in Dept. of Orthopedics, IMS, BHU is substantial- more than 30 cases / month. Anterior column needs reconstruction in various cases- trauma, tumor, infection such as tuberculosis, which is very common. If the project materializes, this can be marketed with competitive cost and benefit to the patient.
Project Title: Designing a cell based prototype for the high throughput screening of cancer drug.
Project PI:Dr. S.C. Gupta and Dr. S.Srikrishna Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Science, BHU
Despite the significant resources being invested in the drug development, total number of effective cancer drugs developed to-date is no significant. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of prototype that can help for the high throughput screening of safe, inexpensive and readily available anti-cancer drug. In the application, be proposed to develop a ‘Cell-based prototype’ for the high-throughput screening of anti-cancer drugs. Thus the proposed study will help identifying potential drug through high-throughput screening in a cost effective manner. We proposed one year for the project within which time a significant progress is anticipated. The completion of the project will lead to development of novel drugs of natural origin that will help for the prevention and treatment of Cancer. The development of the prototype will greatly help in reducing the cost associated with the cancer drug development process.
Project Title: Designing a fabrication a noval Bilirubin interface removal device for clinical laboratories.
Project PI:Dr. Kamlesh Manohar Plandurkar Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Medical Science, BHU
Elevated concentrations of bilirubin are source of endogenous interference. Part of the interference arises from the spectral properties of bilirubin, another part from bilirubin’s ability to react chemically with reagents. Bilirubin reacts with peroxidase- catalyzed reactions, as are used in the detection systems for glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid. Bilirubin causes a negative interference with Jaffe’s method for creatinine. Also, bilirubin causes a negative interference with the enzymatic method for creatinine that is based on creatinine, creatinase, and sarcosine oxidase and detects H2O2 with peroxidase. Bilirubin interferes with determinations of uric acid, cholesterol, and triglycerides that use peroxidase-coupled reactions. Part of the interference is chemical, thought to be cause by the destruction by bilirubin of a reaction intermediate, which is partially corrected by adding Ferro cyanide to the reagents. To the best of our knowledge, the proportion of bilirubin in serum or plasma between conjugated or unconjugated is not a significant factor for interference. They might lead to partial correction of result in one of the parameters while interfering with result of all other parameters. This will lead to loss of precious samples especially in neonates. This problem has lead to find out a physical way for removal of chemical and spectral interference of Bilirubin so as to give accurate values of various laboratory parameters normally affected by hyperbilirubinemia.
