Brief Description of Project

A green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems.

Green roofs also provide extensive environmental air quality benefits through the ability to absorb not only greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, but also pollutants and dust.

Green roofs reduce the heat flux through the roof, and less energy for cooling or heating can lead to significant cost savings. Shading the outer surface of the building envelope has been shown to be more effective than internal insulation. In summer, the green roof protects the building from direct solar heat.
